There are restrictions on access to abortion in many countries, even though there are many options to have an abortion at home. Misoprostol tablets are beneficial as it is used to treat other conditions, which include abortion, and it widely available. You can purchase this in a pharmacy without any prescription.

Using misoprostol tablets is a safe and effective way to end a pregnancy, providing you with the correct information about using the pills. Remember to proceed only if you plan for an abortion at home and not by a doctor in the hospital. It might be a good option if you are less than 12 weeks pregnant.

Preparing yourself before taking Misoprostol tablets

Before starting the process, make sure that you are comfortable where you can lie down. Do not forget to use sanitary pads, and you must have someone who can support you, such as a friend, partner, or relative. You will be able to eat lightly and drink. It is also a good idea to be close to a toilet and have a health facility or helpline you can contact if you experience any complications.

Complications are very unlikely, but if you have a problem, remember, you can say that you are having a miscarriage if it is banned in your country. The doctor will not know that you have taken misoprostol tablets.

How to take Misoprostol tablets

Check that your pill is 200 micrograms each. The following are the ways to take misoprostol tablets:

  • The best option is to insert 4 tablets into your vagina as far as it is comfortable and leave them inside. This is the easiest method and has the lowest side effects. However, the pills might stay in the vagina for 2 to 3 days. If a provider examines you during the time, in case of complication, the pills or what remains of the pills will be visible during the vaginal inspection, and the provider will know you have used them. This might cause problems if abortion is restricted in your country.
  • The second method of taking the pills is to place the 4 pills under your tongue and let them dissolve gradually instead. Do not eat or drink anything or swallow the drugs for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, you can sip some water and swallow what is left of the pills. If you vomit before 30 minutes, you need to put new drugs under your tongue. If you vomit after 30 minutes, there is no need to worry as all the pills will have been absorbed. If you have inserted them into your vagina, this is not relevant.

What happens after taking the pills?

You need to wait for 3 hours and repeat the same process, either inserting 4 pills into your vagina or putting the pills under your tongue. Bleeding and cramping should start within 3 to 4 hours of taking the first 4 pills. There is no need to worry in this situation, as this is a sign that the pills are working.

If you are under 10 weeks and bleeding and cramping have started after two doses of 4 pills, you do not need to take pills anymore. However, if you are between 10 to 12 weeks pregnant or have not started bleeding, you should take another dose of 4 tablets, making it up to 12 pills in total. If nothing happens are taking 3 doses, you will need to visit a health provider as there may be medical reasons that it has not worked.
